Sunshine
What a way to end the month of March. 70 and sunny. Just 30 short days ago there was snow on the ground and little hope in the air that winter would leave. Nothing like a little sun to change your attitude.

Luke likes all the stuff involved with baseball and cares very little about the actual playing. We need to work on that.
Baseball season starts in a couple weeks. Lots of work to do, like perfecting the art of catching and shooting at the same time.
We went out to the farm to celebrate my dad’s 70th birthday. Of course there was a chore to do before we went in. At first I thought he was stalling to avoid the party. Then I realized it’s just an excuse to use the tractor.
This is looking back to nearly 700 riders who started Barry-Roubaix: a gravel road bike race. These people are smart, their race was 35 miles long. I choose to race elite which was 65 miles. It was a long and difficult day, but the course is fantastic and racing was intense. It was a great turnout for March. This event is going to become a very big deal soon.
Really. Onion Goggles. While not the height of cooking fashion, apparently they worked.
Luke said Simon made a really good JFK, so Steph and I went to check him out. We both wondered what goes on in a 2nd grader’s head to say “he’s really good.” Turns out he was. Not only was his accent spot on, he had a lot of poise for 7. This kid has a future in politics.
It was wax museum day for the Lakeside 2nd graders. Each student dressed up like a person in history and they had a pre-written speech they had to give whenever you pushed the “button” on their desks. Luke delivered his with a southern accent.
Luke is working on a pretty cool school project. I’ll reveal the finished product tomorrow.
Amigurumi #2. Princess Leia is looking good and nice improvement over the Ewok.
Steph and the boys made some chocolate gooey goodness for my return from my cycling trip. Yeah, it’s as good as it looks.
If it’s not clear by now Louisville has some of the best cycling roads I’ve ever been on.
After riding for 3 days you get really hungry. Can’t image what 2 more days of riding will bring – food wise.
Not only are the roads amazing, it’s warm and sunny. That helps.
I’m on the road in Louisville Kentucky to get some riding in. The roads are really nice.
Not sure if it was the paper tricorne hat or the socks, maybe both. Either way Cam was pretty styling for colonial day.
This is Steph’s first attempt at Amigurumi, the Japanese art of crocheting small stuffed animals and anthropomorphic creatures. I think it’s pretty awesome and can’t wait for the next one.
Our neighbors had a scavenger hunt birthday party today for their kids today. Girls vs. boys. There are 4 turning 8 years old – yep, it’s quads. So each kid invited their friends from school which turned out to be essentially the entire 2nd grade class. I tried to take a picture but they were too busy partying to pose.
The snow retreated pretty quickly over the weekend and it feels like spring outside. The boys delivered the paper today with their roller blades on and not boots. There is hope in the air that winter is finally over.
Luke is sporting the new Leadout Racing shirts and giving me his best race face. Too bad he hasn’t learned to ride a bike yet.
After 3 days and 200,000 people, not only can I not complete a sentence, I’ve started seeing things.
The Arnold Sports Festival is a madhouse without Arnold showing up. So when Arnold walked onto the show floor it was complete madness. A path was set out for him by state troopers and secret service and they meant business. I couldn’t move to a better spot to get a better shot. When I tried, I was reminded by a man in a dark suit with an ear piece that he very serious about me not moving. And so I present to you the back of Arnold’s head.
I’m at the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, which is 3 days of fitness insanity. The expo hall has 700 booths, 150,000+ spectators and 18,000 people competing in everything from bodybuilding to arm wrestling. It’s loud and exhausting. During a break from working the booth, I stepped out into the hall where there was a cross-fit demo. They were stacking up 10-inch blocks and having guys jump them. They asked the crowd if anyone wanted to try and this guy steps up. If you look carefully you’ll see there are 5 blocks, so 50 inches. Add an extra 3-4 inches for that weight on top, and that is crazy tall. This guy took 2-3 steps and hopped over the stack. Amazing.
I flew to Columbus Ohio today, which is not far from Grand Rapids. Only a 5-hour drive. It took 2 flights to get there including a long layover in Cleveland. Total flight time was 1:20. Total stand in line, sit, wait, etc. time? 4 hours. I should have driven.
Luke came into the office today to tell me he’s bored. Never mind that it’s 50 and sunny outside. Since going outside wasn’t an option today I told him there was nothing I could do and he should go read a book. “Ok” he said. Apparently I need to say that more.
I have a lot of fun trying to capture Tex when he’s in full-spaz mode. He can turn on a dime which makes me miss a lot of shots. But some of those “missed” shots are actually keepers.
