Garden Party
The last day of May was celebrated with the planting of the garden. We could have gotten away with it last week since it’s been really warm, but this Michigan and while it was close to 90 this weekend it could have been 40.

Ask any 11-year-old boy what he wants to do for his birthday party, and this will be his answer. Classic Arcade has all the old school video games: Pac-man, Galaga, Tempest, plus a whole bunch of pinball machines from different eras. The boys had a blast – so did Steph and I.
How did I reward myself for a 226 mile bike ride? A trip to the promised land: Shorts Brewing Company in Bellaire.
For the last 3 years I’ve tried to ride my bike from Grand Rapids to the Mackinac Bridge in Mackinaw City. It’s about 225 miles away. The first year it took me 2 days. Last year there were construction detours, and I only made it 207 miles before stopping in Petoskey. This year I started earlier and planned for construction but happily ran into none. I made it to the bridge in 12 hours 28 minutes riding a total 226.1 miles.
I was at a photo shoot today and it was near the airport. I know I just got back from vacation but I’m still itching to travel again.
Like a lot of kids Luke made a birthday list for his up-coming 8th birthday. I just noticed he added another item. #13. No Booster Seat. We are sick of it as much as him.
Just got a shipment of Soigneur stickers for your car. They are going to make nice giveaways.
The trip is over – 8 days of cycling from Northern California to Southern California. All while being able to watch the pros race the Tour of California.
I got to watch and shoot from the announcer’s stage for Stage 7 of the Tour of California. Thanks to Jamie Smith, announcer, author, and bike racer for the invite. Cool perspective at a big race.
Stage 6 of the Tour had the pros riding a very difficult 145 miles and climbing almost 15,000 feet to finish at Big Bear Lake. Big Bear was packed with cycling fans and I didn’t get a great spot. Here is my view of Peter Sagan taking the win.
We skipped today’s Tour of California stage and took our own route through the Sequoia National Park. It’s still the off season so we pretty much had the road to ourselves. I’ve ridden on lots scenic roads, but this is close to the top of my list. Too bad I can only post one picture from the day.
We are pretty much riding every amazing road in California.
This has to be the single greatest bike ride in the US. We started in Pacifica, CA and rode 20 miles along Highway 1. We turned from the beach and climbed up and down 40 miles through the California rainforest. Yeah, it looked like this the whole way.
I’m helping lead 16 riders through all the stages of the Tour of California. While we were out on Stage 2 we realized we weren’t the only tour group out on the course.
Today’s stage was 104 miles from Nevada City to Sacramento. Our group rode 82 which was plenty. This is the Foresthill Bridge which is the 3rd highest bridge in the US and is the tallest in California. Oh, and it’s 730+ feet above the river. Probably not smart to ride a bike and take a picture at the same time. See those roads down there? We descended all the way down, crossed the river, then climbed almost 1000 feet out of the valley. It was a good day.
22 people, 20 bikes, 1 dog. Lots of cycling from Northern California (Nevada City) to Southern California (LA). We all flew in to LA, so it was a long drive up to Nevada City to start the tour.
This is the start of today’s ride. Amazing
It always amazes me when I fly into LA to see how many people live here.
Okay, so I’m no food stylist, but it sure looked worthy of a picture.
Back in September I shot graduation pics for Steph’s niece. It’s now May and she’s finally picked her favorites. This was a nice choice.
For the 7th time and the least prepared I ran the River Bank Run 25K in 1:58 minutes. It hurt more than it should and next year I’ll be more prepared. Not really to go faster just to hurt less.
The Fifth Third River Bank Run is tomorrow. I ran under 2 hours last year which gets me a different color race number and better placing at the start. It’s a nice reward for running well the previous year. However it’s not the yellow elite runner bib. Those are for the guys who finish 30-35 faster than me.
The Grattan Race series started up again for its 31st year. The races are held on a 2-mile race track for cars and motorcycles, but once a week they host cyclists. It’s hard racing and for a Wednesday evening it’s great training. This shot was taken during the cool-down with my new video camera. More about that later.
Steph thinks he looks ferocious but he’s not. It’s just his natural drive and focus to succeed.
Luke and his friend Jack were playing this Lord of the Rings board game that Cam made up complete with a map and game pieces. I was sitting in the other room when I overheard this conversation: Jack: I just killed a Zombie Aragorn for you Luke. You’re welcome. Luke: There are no Zombie Aragorns in the movie. Jack: Maybe not in the adult version.
